Nagel-Group puts electric refrigerated trailers into operation

The Nagel-Group has put four new electric refrigerated trailers into operation. The trailers with electrically powered refrigeration units enable emission-free and low-noise refrigerated operation for food transport in the fresh and frozen food sector. The e-trailers will be used at the Hamburg, Reichenbach and Traiskirchen (Austria) sites.

"The commissioning of the new electric refrigerated trailers is a further step in our endeavour to offer environmentally friendly and future-oriented logistics solutions," says Jens Kleiner, Chief Operating Officer at Nagel-Group. "In close cooperation with Krone and Mitsubishi, we are bringing this innovative technology in the field of active cooling to the road."

The trailers run purely electrically via an on-board 43 kWh battery and do not require a recuperation/generator axle. The cooling system is independent of the towing unit and can also be used when the vehicle is stationary or during loading and unloading on the ramp. The expected running time of the refrigeration unit is up to 14 hours in fresh goods transport and up to eight hours in deep-freeze transport. The planned service life of the trailers is up to ten years.

"The electric refrigerated trailers are quieter and easier to maintain than conventional diesel refrigerated trailers," adds Dirk Lückingsmeier, Head of Fleet at Nagel-Group. "The battery systems work with low-voltage power, so no high-voltage technician is required for repair and maintenance work on the vehicle. The cooling machines produce hardly any noise and no exhaust fumes, which reduces the impact on the environment and our employees," says Lückingsmeier.

With the purchase of the four new electric refrigerated trailers, Nagel-Group is taking the next steps in the electrification of its fleet. In addition to the e-trailers, electric tractor units and electric distribution vehicles are already in continuous use in the network of Germany's largest food logistics company. Further pilot projects in the field of e-mobility will be realised this year.
